Frequently Asked Questions

Credentials & Scope

Are you a CPA?

Yes. I’m licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas, with an MBA in Accounting & Finance from the University of St. Thomas. My background includes public accounting at PricewaterhouseCoopers and corporate accounting and risk roles in the energy sector before I started this practice in 2017.

Is your practice a CPA firm?

No, and that distinction matters. Texas licenses individual CPAs and CPA firms separately. A firm license from the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy is what allows a business to perform attest work — audits, reviews, and compilations — and to hold itself out as a “CPA firm.” My practice is not registered as a CPA firm, so the services I provide are not regulated by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy.

Then why work with you instead of a CPA firm?

Because most small businesses don’t actually need attest work. What they need is someone who can close the books accurately, tell them what the numbers mean, and help them make decisions — the controller and CAO function that a company with $2M in revenue can’t justify hiring full time. That’s what I do. When you do need audited or reviewed statements, you need a licensed firm, and I’ll tell you that plainly and point you to one.

Does “not a CPA firm” mean you’re held to a lower standard?

My individual CPA license, its ethics requirements, and its continuing education requirements all still apply to me personally. What changes is the scope of what I’m permitted to offer: I cannot provide attest services or issue any report that expresses assurance on financial statements.

What I Can Do

What services do you actually provide?
  • Outsourced controller and CAO-level support: month-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, closing calendars
  • Bookkeeping cleanup and catch-up work, and QuickBooks setup, conversion, and troubleshooting
  • Internal management reporting — P&L by job, department, or location; balance sheet and cash flow reporting; KPI dashboards
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow projections
  • Margin, pricing, and unit economics analysis
  • Internal process and controls design: approval workflows, segregation of duties, documentation
  • Back-office operations support, including AP/AR workflow, payroll coordination, and vendor systems
  • Business planning and financial modeling for growth, hiring, equipment, or acquisition decisions
Can you prepare financial statements for my business?

Yes — for internal management use. These are statements prepared from your records for you and your team to run the business with. They carry no accountant’s report, no opinion, and no assurance of any kind, and they should not be represented to a third party as audited, reviewed, or compiled.

Can you help us get ready for an audit?

Yes, and this is a common engagement. I can organize your records, build the schedules and supporting workpapers your auditor will request, clean up accounts before fieldwork starts, and act as the client-side point of contact through the process. I just can’t be the one performing the audit.

Can you help with financing or a lender package?

I can build the projections, the historical analysis, and the supporting schedules that go into a loan or SBA package, and I can help you prepare for lender questions. If the lender specifically requires CPA-audited, reviewed, or compiled statements, that piece has to come from a licensed CPA firm.

Do you handle real estate too?

Yes, but as a separate engagement. I’m a licensed Texas REALTOR® affiliated with Pinnacle Realty Advisors, working with residential buyers and sellers in Kingwood and Northeast Houston. Real estate services run through the brokerage and are governed by TREC, not by this consulting practice.

What I Cannot Do

Can you audit, review, or compile our financial statements?

No. Under the Texas Public Accountancy Act, attest services — audits, reviews, compilations, and other assurance engagements — may only be performed through a CPA firm licensed by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. If you need one of these, I’ll refer you to a licensed firm and can help you scope the engagement and prepare for it.

Can you certify, verify, or sign off on our numbers for a third party?

No. I can’t issue an opinion or any form of assurance on financial statements, whether for a bank, an investor, a bonding company, a franchisor, a landlord, or a regulator. Any statements I prepare are for internal use and are labeled that way.

Can you give investment advice?

No. I’m not a registered investment adviser and I don’t provide personalized investment recommendations or securities advice.

Can you give legal advice?

No. I’m not an attorney. I can flag issues worth raising with your attorney and work alongside counsel, but entity structuring, contracts, and legal opinions belong with a lawyer.

Do you prepare tax returns?

No. I don’t prepare or file income tax returns. When it’s time to file, I’ll gladly refer you to a trusted tax professional I work with.

What happens when I need something outside your scope?

I tell you early, before it becomes a problem, and I refer you to someone who can do it. I’d rather send you to the right person than stretch an engagement past where it should go.

Working Together

Where are your clients located?

I’m based in Kingwood and work with businesses throughout Northeast Houston and the greater Houston area. Most of the work happens remotely regardless of location, so distance is rarely the constraint.

How do engagements typically start?

With a complimentary introductory phone call. We talk through what you need and whether I can provide a solution for it. If it’s a fit, I send an engagement letter setting out the scope of work and the fees before any work begins.

How do you charge?

A flat hourly rate. Your monthly bill tracks directly to the work you ask for, so you can use me for as little or as much as you’d like.
